Maximizing Value from your Testing Laboratory
By: Admin on December 28, 2012
Now that you have selected a lab partner, it is important to learn how to make the most of what you receive from them on an ongoing basis. Here we will examine the process to prove how simple it is to increase that value by building a collaborative relationship.
Partnering is a fundamental shift in the way value is created. The shift is from value that resides in the product or service to value that is created for both parties through the experience of the buyer interacting with the seller. The idea is to move from the traditional buyer-seller relationship to one of mutual co...

Vapor Intrusion Updates: Are You Prepared?
By: Admin on October 10, 2012
Vapor Intrusion is a potential pathway for human exposure to subsurface contamination. Vapor intrusion occurs when volatile compounds migrate from contaminated groundwater or soil into the indoor air of an overlying or nearby building. Vapor intrusion can result in human exposure to VOC compounds and other compounds which can pose a risk to human health. In November of 2002 the EPA released a guidance document which gives options on how to mitigate risk to vapor intrusion.
Since that guidance document was written, a better understanding of VOC migration and improvements t...

Nonmetallic Case: Adhesive Bonding Failure on Metal Part
By: Admin on October 9, 2012
An assembly plant processing parts for the petrochemical industry was having difficulty getting any epoxy glue to bond two metal pieces. The problem seemed isolated to a specific batch of parts which had been received from a supplier. A random selection of 5 unglued parts was submitted to Sherry Laboratories for testing. Our chemist used a solvent to rinse the parts in order to collect any surface residue. The collected residue, after evaporation of the solvent, was tested by FTIR spectroscopy. The resulting spectrum was consistent with a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbon oil and silicone. F...
